Q: What is the difference between carbide tip and HSS turning tools?
A: HSS (high-speed steel) tools are ground from a solid bar of tool steel. Carbide-tipped tools have a harder C6 carbide insert brazed onto a steel shank. Carbide runs at higher cutting speeds, holds an edge longer in steel and aluminum, and resists heat better. HSS is easier to reshape on a bench grinder and is preferred for wood. For metal mini lathe work, carbide tips cut cleaner and require sharpening less often.

Q: Which shank size should I order for my mini lathe?
A: Most 7x10 and 7x12 mini lathes (Harbor Freight, Sieg C2/SC2, Grizzly G8688) use a 4-way tool post with a 5/16" (8 mm) bore. Grizzly G0602 and similar mid-range bench lathes typically take 3/8" (10 mm) or 1/2" (12 mm). Measure your tool post slot width or check your lathe manual before ordering.

Q: Are these suitable for threading operations?
A: The set includes one 60° threading tool for cutting standard V-threads in steel. For metric or ACME threads, you would need a dedicated threading insert or a different included tool profile ground to the required angle.
