Overview

This 9-piece lathe chisel set gives you nine carbide-tipped turning tools in a single purchase. Each tool has a steel shank body with a brazed carbide tip — harder and longer-lasting than HSS for cutting steel, aluminum, and brass on a mini or bench lathe. The set covers the most-used turning profiles: straight turning, facing, grooving, threading, and boring. Choose from three shank sizes (8 mm / 5/16", 10 mm / 3/8", or 12 mm / 1/2") to match your tool post and quick-change holders.

Available Options

  • 8 mm (5/16") — fits tool posts with 5/16" bore; suited for 7x10 through 7x14 mini lathes and compact bench lathes
  • 10 mm (3/8") — fits 3/8" bore holders; common on mid-range mini lathes and 4-way tool posts
  • 12 mm (1/2") — fits 1/2" bore holders; designed for larger bench lathes and heavy-duty quick-change tool posts

Key Features

  • 9-piece comprehensive coverage — includes straight right-hand turning, straight left-hand turning, facing, profiling, grooving, parting, threading (60°), boring bar, and bent tool profiles
  • Brazed carbide tips — C6-grade cemented carbide tips withstand higher cutting speeds and temperatures than HSS; resharpenable on a green-wheel grinder
  • Three shank sizes in one listing — 8 mm / 5/16", 10 mm / 3/8", and 12 mm / 1/2" to fit most mini and bench lathe tool posts without adapters
  • Ground steel shank bodies — shanks are ground square for consistent seating in tool post slots; no rocking or shimming required
  • Marked tool holder style — each shank is etched with its profile code so you can grab the right tool quickly
  • Ships as a matched set — all 9 tools arrive together with no partial shipments

Compatibility

The 8 mm (5/16") shank size fits the tool posts on most 7-inch mini lathes. The 10 mm (3/8") fits mid-range 4-way tool posts. The 12 mm (1/2") is designed for standard bench lathe tool posts. Verify your tool post bore size before ordering — shank must fit the post slot without shimming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between carbide tip and HSS turning tools?
A: HSS (high-speed steel) tools are ground from a solid bar of tool steel. Carbide-tipped tools have a harder C6 carbide insert brazed onto a steel shank. Carbide runs at higher cutting speeds, holds an edge longer in steel and aluminum, and resists heat better. HSS is easier to reshape on a bench grinder and is preferred for wood. For metal mini lathe work, carbide tips cut cleaner and require sharpening less often.

Q: Which shank size should I order for my mini lathe?
A: Most 7x10 and 7x12 mini lathes (Harbor Freight, Sieg C2/SC2, Grizzly G8688) use a 4-way tool post with a 5/16" (8 mm) bore. Grizzly G0602 and similar mid-range bench lathes typically take 3/8" (10 mm) or 1/2" (12 mm). Measure your tool post slot width or check your lathe manual before ordering.

Q: Do these tools fit a quick-change tool post (QCTP)?
A: Yes, as long as the QCTP holder bore matches the shank size you order. A QCTP for a mini lathe often takes 3/8" shanks. Verify your QCTP holder bore size; Aloris-style and Dorian-style holders for 7-inch lathes typically accept 3/8" or 1/2" shanks.

Q: Can I regrind the carbide tips when they wear?
A: Yes. Use a green silicon carbide grinding wheel (80-120 grit) to regrind the cutting face. Do not use a standard aluminum oxide wheel — it will glaze over the carbide. Relief angle of 7-10° and a positive rake of 5-8° is typical for general turning.

Q: Are these suitable for threading operations?
A: The set includes one 60° threading tool for cutting standard V-threads in steel. For metric or ACME threads, you would need a dedicated threading insert or a different included tool profile ground to the required angle.
